Bernadette Dunham, DVM, PhD, a professional lecturer in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, has been appointed to the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Dunham will serve a three-year term on the board, which is the program unit of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine that is responsible for organizing and overseeing studies on agriculture, forestry, wildlife, and the use of natural resources, including land and water. The Board is responsible for planning new studies, overseeing ongoing projects, and examining emerging issues related to food, fuel and natural resources.
Dunham’s focus at the Milken Institute SPH is on One Health issues, which is a multisectoral approach that aims to achieve optimal health outcomes for people, animals, plants, and their shared environment. She formally served as the Director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine from 2008 to 2016. She returned to the FDA in August 2019, where she is currently serving as an advisor for the FDA’s “One Health Initiative.”
"It is truly a great honor to be appointed as a member of the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources," Dunham said. "The opportunity to work with an amazing group of colleagues as we join in the NASEM's commitment to advise, advance and connect the sciences for the public good is absolutely fantastic."
