On June 29, 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that Loretta DiPietro, professor and chair of the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University (Milken Institute SPH), was one of 17 nationally recognized experts in physical activity and health to be appointed to the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee.
Over the next two years, the committee members will look at the current scientific evidence surrounding physical activity and health, and provide recommendations that will contribute to the development of the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. According to HHS, the guidelines are “an essential resource for health professionals and policymakers, providing science-based guidance on how children and adults can improve their health through physical activity.”
Through her accomplished career, DiPietro has bridged the gap between population-based public health and the clinical and physiological domains of exercise science. She is a widely published researcher with particular interest in the role of physical activity in the health of older adults, and has been awarded grants from the National Institute on Aging and the American Cancer Society. DiPietro has lectured at medical schools, public health schools and other organizations around the world. She joined Milken Institute SPH in 2008.
