The Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission will hold a global virtual event on September 15 to launch the Commission’s new report on non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDI) and help start a movement around these growing health disparities. NCDIs kill and disable millions of people living in the poorest countries and this event will help public health experts come together to find solutions, said Adnan A. Hyder, MD, MPH, PhD, senior associate dean for research at Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) and a member of the Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission.
The event will coincide with the publication of the Lancet Commission report, which documents the burden that NCDIs place on the world’s most vulnerable populations.
“The report calls for urgent action to address the growing problem of NCDIs, especially now as these same populations face grave risks from COVID-19, and highlighted the diversity of NCDI’s which affect the poorest billion globally” said Hyder, who is also Director of the Center on Commercial Determinants of Health, which is based at Milken Institute SPH. “Our findings and recommendations should go to help mobilize more funding and a greater commitment to tackle this global public health problem.”
